OpenAI just made a billion dollar bet… not on models, not on chips, but on juice

The company is teaming up with SoftBank to invest $1B into SB Energy, with each writing a $500M check. The goal? Build massive data centers that don’t just deliver compute, but generate the electricity to back it up.

Forget futuristic AGI for a second… right now, the bottleneck for AI is power. And the companies that figured that out are starting to act like utilities.

Take the 1.2 gigawatt facility SB Energy is building in rural Texas for OpenAI. That’s enough energy to power a mid-size city, now being redirected to fuel inference at industrial scale. This isn’t a one off. SB Energy is spinning up multiple multi-gigawatt campuses, with some already under construction.

This shift has been brewing. Infrastructure used to mean racks of GPUs in someone else’s cloud. Now, it’s entirely plausible that the most strategically valuable part of your AI stack is your energy supply. OpenAI gets it… they’re not just designing the models, they’re helping design the dirt under your fingernails power infrastructure to run them.

And there’s another ripple effect here… if you’re relying on hyperscalers to host your workloads, expect some heat. Power costs are already rising, and that volatility will get passed down. The more inference heavy your app gets, the more you’ll feel it.
